It is often necessary to identify a disease before consulting a doctor for treatment. At times we come across regular scratching and itching of the skin but hardly consider it leading to any serious infection. Not that it has to lead to something infectious but a certain probability remains for which we need to be very careful especially against diseases that are inherited from our descendants and of no fault of the individual.

When skin on joint areas of the body becomes rough and thick with red or pink patches you may be a victim of plaque psoriasis. Areas over the elbow, knees and scalp are generally affected which undergo continuous rubbing or abrasion. It can appear as small flat bumps or large thick plaques of raised skin with red patches, sometimes dry skin with big flakes which shed off over time. Pulling of these small areas of dry white flakes of the skin causes a tiny blood shed or blood clot on the skin, this is termed as Auspitz sign.

On the nails, it appears in pinpoint depressions or in white spots or as large yellowish brown colors no the nail bed; many confuse it with fungal nail infection if not diagnosed correctly. Besides, Psoriasis can also occur in moist areas like navel or the area between the buttocks and appears in flat red patches and affecting these areas can make psoriasis cure completely impossible. They may also be confused with other skin infections like yeast infections, skin irritation or bacterial staph infections; and on the scalp it appears like dandruff with dry flakes that fall off pretty often. This may even lead to severe hair loss, though confused with dandruff (seborrhea) at times, the treatment process for both remains the same.

Its not too difficult to identify the disease, characteristic skin changes that involve the skin getting rough and thicker with red patches is generally identified as a psoriatic skin. Plaque psoriasis being the most common type of psoriasis results in thick red scaly skin. When a skin is raised up to more than a centimeter in diameter it is easily felt since it swells up and then becomes rough. The raise in skin can also vary in a few millimeters of thickness. Patients with darker complexions have their skin affected with psoriasis turn darker and less of redness.

The most prominent psoriasis symptom is itching. When ever a part of skin starts to itch for a long time and starts turning reddish it can be a very well identification of being attacked by psoriasis. Scratching the infected part can lead to increased inflammation and involve more of itching and that may lead to severe psoriasis. If not taken care of on time and continued scratching may even lead to a secondary bacterial or fungal infection from nails.

It can also occur in places that are generally not prone to the disease like armpits, under the breasts and areas around the genitalia. Some people can also develop a psoriatic arthritis which involves immense pain in bones and stiff joints.
